What is Microsoft Classroom

A Classroom is a place where anyone who is teaching or taking courses can share content, announcements, and assignments. In a Classroom, your courses are all gathered together so that they’re easy to find and manage. You can add your own content such as files and notes, access Office 365 tools in a web-based interface, and easily share that content with other people who need it.

When you take an online class or are teaching one, your instructors may use Microsoft Classroom because it’s built right into Office 365 Education—no additional software is required. A course includes all of your assignments organized around a common theme or subject area so they’re easy to find.

An Office 365 Education account is your place to create, share, and collaborate on assignments with other people. You can use it alongside classroom features or without them. If you are enrolled in an online class, your teacher may set up a Classroom for you, in which case all of your coursework will be available there.

Otherwise, you can create your own Classroom. How you do that depends on how comfortable you are using technology and what kinds of devices you have access to. Whether or not you’re using a Classroom as part of your coursework, chances are good that someone has already set one up and filled it with information related to that course.

If you have an Office 365 Education account, there’s a good chance that someone has already set up a Classroom or two for you. In Office 365 Outlook Web App, on your mobile device, or in Outlook on your computer, simply click Classrooms at the top right and look around—there may be one waiting just for you. If there isn’t one that was created just for you, try looking at a different class. Click My Groups & more and then select Find More on the left and type Classroom in the search box. To create your own Classroom, you have two options. In Office 365 Outlook Web App, on your mobile device, or in Outlook on your computer, click Settings at the top right and then click Classrooms. Click + New.

The other option is within a course itself: If you are enrolled in an online class and have access to a teacher-created Classroom, there’s likely a button that says something like Manage (Class Name) in Microsoft Classroom next to any assignments that can be moved there from other places such as Outlook. There might also be text like Create Assignment above it.

If you’re using a Classroom without being part of an online class, create your own Classroom if you want to. From within Outlook or in Office 365 Outlook Web App, click Settings at the top right and then click Classrooms. Click + New.

You can also look at previous class rosters and then send out invitations. Once your Classroom is created, anyone who receives one of your invitations can join by accepting it and entering their email address and password from that same place.

The first step to using Microsoft Teams is setting up your organization’s Office 365 account. This involves logging into an existing account or creating a new one, and then linking it with your Microsoft Team email address (if you have one). Once you’re logged in, navigate over to Office 365 and select Get Started under Teams. Choose your service level (such as Standard or Business) and review what will happen during setup. Then go ahead and set up your groupware in Teams.

Click Next after that and you’ll see a summary of your setup options. Click Finish once everything looks good. And there you have it—your Office 365 account is now linked with Microsoft Team and ready to go! A quick word on security: if you want your organization’s student or staff emails sent directly into Teams, be sure they use two-factor authentication. Additionally, while both OneDrive and SharePoint Online are included in many Office 365 plans, only some organizations have them enabled in their plan by default.

If you want both, simply sign in to your account and go over to Users > Go down two menus until you see More services > choose SharePoint from here. Then go down two more menus until you see OneDrive (personal). Finally, click Get Started and wait a few minutes while your school or business logs in with their domain administrator credentials.

Since you can use most Office apps with a single sign-on, it makes sense that Team can be used as well. It works pretty much as you would expect which means that once a participant logs into Office 365 Education using their school account, they are automatically logged into their team when they join it.

That’s convenient because students don’t have to sign in twice or remember multiple accounts and passwords. This greatly reduces frustration when joining new teams and helps them focus on getting work done instead of trying to log in or sign up for a team manually every time.

The ability to add related documents and files is another feature that makes Team very useful when it comes to online classes. The integration with Outlook ensures that documents are automatically uploaded and available on the team drive once they are sent via email or added as attachments by participants in a team.

That’s important because students can see what their fellow students have attached at a glance which means there is less chance of getting outdated information during a discussion. It also means there’s no need for students to attach separate copies of documents every time they contribute to one, saving them both time and hassle.

The ability to add and access shared files in real-time is another great feature that online teachers can take advantage of. The Office 365 Education portal gives them easy access to all their students and allows them to reach out and communicate with everyone from anywhere.

Teachers can also share their screen during lectures through tools like Whiteboard or Sway which makes it easier for students, who are often in different locations, to understand concepts better by viewing them live. Students who use Office 365 Education have also been taking advantage of these features as well so it’s a win-win situation overall.

Sharing Content with Students

While there is technically a team folder, you can’t send files to students from there. Instead, use OneDrive for Business (or SharePoint), as it’s part of your OneDrive account and has much larger storage limits. Note that if you want to share content with your entire class, you’ll need to upload it in bulk—there’s no way to share with everyone on an individual basis.

That said, sharing content using OneDrive is easy—just right-click or tap and hold on your file and select Share, then follow prompts. Once shared, anyone with access will be able to view your file online.

Note that if you share an individual file, it will be visible only to those users who have access rights. Also, note that you can’t share content with only specific people—you’ll need to share with everyone. The same holds true for viewing shared content; if it’s shared with your group, all members will be able to view it. To see what’s been shared, just select Files from within Teams and then click on My OneDrive (in the top-right corner). You’ll then see a list of all files in your team, which includes any uploaded as well as links to files shared by others.

Note that you can also share content with students who aren’t on your team. To do so, create a free group and then upload your file. Once it’s there, select Files > Invite People and add in their email addresses one at a time.

It’s worth noting that you can’t send a link via email, but rather will need to have them manually copy and paste it into their browser address bar. When shared with anyone outside of your team, anyone will be able to view or download your file (again, as long as they have access rights). Also, note that any links you provide won’t expire.

While Microsoft Teams can be used in many ways, if you want something that’s easy to use with students or colleagues without having to deal with email or a clunky cloud-based storage solution (like Dropbox),

it may not be worth adding yet another tool into your workflow. However, if you’re looking for some basic functionality that makes sharing files simple and straightforward—especially when dealing with multiple people—it’s an interesting alternative worth exploring.

Managing Student Behaviour

There are many ways in which educators can encourage positive behavior and discourage students from acting out. One of these is using a class app that lets you track what students are doing online, set reminders, and assign tasks.

This helps put everyone on notice about how they’re spending their time online and make sure they’re focusing on what they should be. You can even use apps that block certain content or websites so you don’t have to worry about students wasting time during class time.

Behavior management systems like ClassDojo can help by giving you a centralized place to track student behavior and assign tasks related to that behavior. For example, if one of your students is disruptive, you can send them a task asking them not to be disruptive.

With ClassDojo’s parent-teacher app, you can also see when your students are offline so you know exactly when they’re in class and when they’re not. And with its classroom-specific app, you don’t have to worry about students getting distracted during class time.

Many teachers have used ClassDojo to great success. One of them, a pre-kindergarten teacher, put ClassDojo next to her whiteboard so students could always see their points right away. She also started keeping a tally of how many times she had told students that they were doing something wrong and show that number on the screen every day.

In less than a week, she saw an improvement in behavior in class with her students now coming up to her regularly asking if they’d gotten negative points. Another teacher said he sees student behavior getting better after he blocked some websites in his classroom app so kids weren’t able to waste time looking at those sites during class time anymore.

ClassDojo also lets you mark students as absent so they don’t receive any points when they’re not in class. So if a student isn’t there, you can send them a task asking them to log back in so they can get their points.

And even though ClassDojo is a system designed specifically for educators, you can use it with students no matter what age they are. If one of your younger kids is sitting around, try sending them a message asking if they need help finding something or showing them how to do something. Your older students may appreciate a reminder about their behavior when you catch them playing around online and send them tasks that reinforce classroom behaviors.

Tips for Teachers

If you have questions, you aren’t alone. Here are some of the most common questions I hear about using Microsoft Teams in online classes: How do I log into my class? If you are a student in an online class, there is probably a classroom section on your Canvas or Moodle site where you can go to join your course. If not, follow these instructions to find it. To find your class in Office 365 click on Meetings and then click More > My teams.

When you’re using Office 365, it will work best if your computer or device has a microphone and speakers or earphones. You’ll also need internet access to make Skype calls. If you don’t have the sound capability on your device, see if there is an app or add-on that will enable you to talk during a meeting without a headset.

Finally, in case anything goes wrong with your connection while talking via video, be sure you can use audio-only instead. If everything works as it should, then great! You can click Start meeting at any time once everything is ready and press Record Meeting to begin recording—or just hit record anyway because everything will be saved automatically.

As an online teacher, you will find it easier if you can download and install a video calling program. Some of my favorites are Camtasia – Which is a powerful screen recorder that makes it easy to create videos and includes features like webcam capture, image capture, audio input, and editing tools.

Google Hangouts – For quick conversations between two people or more, Google Hangouts is a great tool that works with many types of devices.

Slack Calls – If your university’s student services team uses Slack in order to communicate with students (and they probably do), then they might set up regular Slack Calls where they invite students into specific rooms to talk about topics related directly to classes or student life.

You may want a microphone and headphones or earphones in order to make sure your voice is as clear as possible. I personally use an inexpensive mic/headset combo that is comfortable and works great with Skype.

If you prefer speakers, I recommend plugging them into your computer rather than relying on your computer’s speakers because they won’t be as clear. A second important tip for sound quality is not to put any additional software on your computer unless it’s absolutely necessary because some programs can cause echo, hissing, or other strange noises that will get in the way of an otherwise perfect recording session.
